IGNOU enters digital sphere to impart education

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) today launched 11 free Massive Open Online Course(MOOC) marking its entry in digital sphere after pioneering distance education.

"IGNOU has now reached the free and digital education horizon, expanding the perimeter of the free and distance education system,'' Minister of State for Higher Education, HRD, Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey said here addressing the 30th convocation of IGNOU.

The MHRD has given the channels of 'Swayam'and 'Swayamprabha' to IGNOU so that it can bring a digital revolution in higher education, but their expectation from the university would now be to extend its students horizon towards digital education through new technology, communication mediums, electronic mediums and devices, Mr Pandey said.

He also mentioned that IGNOU has signed a MoU with the Kendriya Vidyalas all over the country to conduct its term end examinations in these schools now.

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Ravindra Kumar in his address apprised the students of the latest developments of the varsity and said that, "The online admission system has received an encouraging response with the University for admission of students for the July 2016 cycle. As many as 1,53,454 students took admission through this mode for the January 2017 cycle.

The university also has developed a cloud based application for online re-registration of existing learners for second/third year for B.A., B.Com, B.Sc., BTS (Bachelor in Tourism Studies) and BSW (Bachelor in Social Work) programmes having duration of more than one year."Cumulative international student enrolment of 66,769 is likely to increase with integration of ICTs and quality of learner support services. 12 Overseas Study centres for fresh admission have been approved," he added.

IGNOU is the largest university in terms of student enrollment. Its current strength of students has crossed the three million mark. There are 1.3 million active students in any particular year. Every year there are 1.3 million fresh enrollments. It is the only pan India University that operates through other parts of the country. It offers more than 200 programmes which are offered every six months in a two admission cycle process.
