With Class XII board examinations starting, harried students and parents can keep stress at bay by following simple preparatory and study methods to deal with the whole process.

While all students deal with stress differently, Career Counselor and education consultant Charushilla Narula advises students to keep a cool head and tide over this period coolly and confidently.

First and foremost, the student must organize themselves well in advance by making a timetable and scheduling time slots for various subjects giving more time to courses that require more preparation. Since time management is a complex but vital to master to be successful, she suggests that students have a designated and organised work space minus distractions.

For some, this may mean almost complete silence; for others, background music helps. A completely tidy room helps to concentrate, while others thrive in a more cluttered environment. Think about what works for you, and take the time to get it right! It is critical to not leave anything to the last moment as that only causes more stress, she says.

Students should practice on old exam papers as it is a good way to test oneself. It familiarises you with the paper format and allows you to time yourself and divide your time accordingly. Also recommended is taking regular breaks. Equally important is to give one's brain a rest too. Making notes is beneficial to remember important things and re reading these notes closer to the exam date helps to retain the information.

Parents can contribute by allowing the students to explain their answers to them. This helps them to get their answers in order and work on the areas that need more practice. However, parents should try add to the stress by constantly questioning the students on their study progress and instead ensure they eat "brain food" such as nuts, fish, seed, yogurt which are proven to aid concentration and memory. It is vital to keep one's brain hydrated while studying so the brain can work at its best, says the counsellor.

On the actual day of the exam, the counsellor wants the student to wake up well in time eat a nutritious meal, get ready calmly and ensure that they have everything they require (stationary, ID's). Lastly, a positive attitude goes a long way in managing stress.

She sums up that for a successful life and career, it is important to manage your stress in a healthy way.
