The Lady Meherbai D Tata Scholarships are awarded by the Lady Meherbai D Tata Education Trust. The Trust was set up in the year 1932, by Sir Dorabji Tata, in the name of his deceased wife, Lady Meherbai Tata. Sir Dorabji Tata put all his wealth, estimated at Rs 10 million into a Trust for use, without any distinction of place, nationality or creed, for the advancement of learning and research, the relief of distress, and other charitable purposes.
This was the beginning of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust - a Trust that has gone on to build institutions of national importance, uplift the nation and its people and change lives. This scholarship in social sciences aim to provide financial assistance to those women who wish to pursue higher studies and research work in social sciences abroad.

The Lady Meherbai D Tata Scholarships for higher studies abroad are given for acquiring a Ph.D degree in the following subjects: Social work, Social Science, Education, Education and Welfare of Children with Special Needs, Status - Health and Empowerment of Women, Gender Studies, Child Health, Development, Nutrition, Health Policy and Health Education, Public Health - Community Health Services, Reproductive Health, Rural Development Work (with a focus on women and children), Communication for Development (with a focus on women's issues).
