International accreditation awarded to four BTech streams

SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur campus secured the IET's international accreditation for all of its four engineering courses. The IET accreditation is an internationally recognised benchmark, awarded to high-quality programmes that provide an ideal preparation for aspiring professional engineers.

The IET is one of the world's leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community and IET accreditation, licensed by the Engineering Council, covers a broad spectrum of engineering and technology subjects. It is recognised around the world as an indicator of quality through the Washington and Sydney accords, governed by the International Engineering Alliance (IEA). Institutions with IET Accredited programmes are eligible to apply for the EUR-ACE label, awarded by European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education (ENAEE).

SRM Institute of Science and Technology applied for IET Accreditation in November 2013 and four of their BTech programmes and Electronics and Instrumentation, Computer Science, Software Engineering and Automobile Engineering are now IET accredited. The accreditation will have a positive impact spreading over five graduating batches from 2017-2021. At the end of the term, a review will be held, clearing which, the accreditation can be extended to another two years. In addition to validating the quality of the institution's programmes, IET Accreditation also provides direct benefits to students graduating from SRM Institute of Science and Technology. It allows better international mobility, job prospects and acceptance for graduate students in foreign universities, opportunities for interdisciplinary research as well as exchanges.

Dr C Muthamizhchelvan, FIET Director (E&T), SRM Institute of Science and Technology, says, "Over the last couple of years, through the accreditation process with the IET and advice of the accreditors, we have made much progress. Although we had secured ABET accreditation for some of our programmes, we applied to the IET's Accreditation programme to bring the best of what is available in the education ecosystem. The IET's process is more rigorous and aligns well with our vision to globalise engineering education by providing as much flexibility to the student's education. We are delighted with the results of our process and look forward to a lasting association with the IET to continue delivering the best to our students."

Congratulating SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Shekhar Sanyal, Country Head and Director, IET India, said, "Quality of our engineering graduates is something very close to the IET and the IET's International Accreditation is a testimonial to this. SRM Institute of Science and Technology has demonstrated continued focus in improving their benchmarks and the IET is very pleased to support them in this journey. I am greatly encouraged by the results and wish all success to the SRM team."

The IET is one of the world's leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community and IET accreditation, licensed by the Engineering Council, covers a broad spectrum of engineering and technology subjects. Colleges in India could approach the IET to accredit their courses.
