The tuition fees of engineering colleges affiliated to the State-owned Anna University have been hiked up to Rs 15,000, today. The hike was effected by Justice N V Balasubramanian Committee appointed to regulate fees by the Tamil Nadu government. From this academic year, the tuition fees for government quota students would be increased from Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000.
For management quota, the fees would be Rs 85,000 from Rs 70,000. This was for the first time since 2012 the fees have been hiked by the government. The decision have been made based on the request from the representatives of self-financing colleges stating that salaries for working staff have been increased and there was a definite need to compensate that.
Earlier, they met Justice Balasubramanian Committee with a demand of a considerable fee hike for engineering courses from this academic year. The consortium of self-financing colleges also requested the fee committee to gather details about the engineering course fees in all the four southern districts.
