Kerala Agriculture Minister V S Sunilkumar suggested to include traffic awareness course in the school curriculum in order to develop a good road culture.
Inaugurating a seminar on road safety organised by the Press Club here, the
Minister said "majority of drivers tend to violate traffic rules and this was
the major cause for road accidents". "Traffic signal violation and left side
overtaking were rampant. Use of seat-belts and helmets could reduce the impact
of accidents," he added.
Former state police chief T P Senkumar said that
steps like mandatory road awareness sessions for traffic offenders should be
conducted. He said that the strength of motor vehicles department should be
increased for effective traffic enforcement. Traffic enforcement should be also
automated.
Pointing out at the higher risks involved in night, the
service of professional drivers should be used for night driving. Those who are
driving at night should also take proper sleep, he added.
National
Transport Planning and Research Centre former director B G Sreedevi said
"drivers should be made more cautious as the risk of fatal accidents during
night is much higher. All vehicles tend to take high speed at night and the
visibility is only 25 percent".
She also stressed the need to ensure
proper safety standards, including warning boards, along roads.
Leading
neurosurgeon Dr. A Marthanda Pillai said "that more emergency ambulance services
should be introduced in the state to ensure proper first-aid to accident
victims". Use of seat-belts and helmets could reduce impact of accidents. About
40 percent of persons suffering serious head injury can't come back to normal
life, he added.
Kerala Government Contractors Association state president
Varghese Kannampally said that "contractors and officials should be held
responsible for poor condition of roads. He also said that roads should be
properly maintained to reduce accidents.
