Kerala Agriculture Minister V S Sunilkumar suggested to include traffic awareness course in the school curriculum in order to develop a good road culture.

Inaugurating a seminar on road safety organised by the Press Club here, the Minister said "majority of drivers tend to violate traffic rules and this was the major cause for road accidents". "Traffic signal violation and left side overtaking were rampant. Use of seat-belts and helmets could reduce the impact of accidents," he added.

Former state police chief T P Senkumar said that steps like mandatory road awareness sessions for traffic offenders should be conducted. He said that the strength of motor vehicles department should be increased for effective traffic enforcement. Traffic enforcement should be also automated.

Pointing out at the higher risks involved in night, the service of professional drivers should be used for night driving. Those who are driving at night should also take proper sleep, he added.

National Transport Planning and Research Centre former director B G Sreedevi said "drivers should be made more cautious as the risk of fatal accidents during night is much higher. All vehicles tend to take high speed at night and the visibility is only 25 percent".

She also stressed the need to ensure proper safety standards, including warning boards, along roads.

Leading neurosurgeon Dr. A Marthanda Pillai said "that more emergency ambulance services should be introduced in the state to ensure proper first-aid to accident victims". Use of seat-belts and helmets could reduce impact of accidents. About 40 percent of persons suffering serious head injury can't come back to normal life, he added.

Kerala Government Contractors Association state president Varghese Kannampally said that "contractors and officials should be held responsible for poor condition of roads. He also said that roads should be properly maintained to reduce accidents.
