Having all kudos for the University of Jammu, 'Flying Sikh' veteran athlete Milkha Singh on Monday asserted that Universities have a great role to play in nurturing the sports talent.
''High institutions like Universities have a big role to play in nurturing
sports talent,'' the veteran athlete said, while sharing moments with Vice
Chancellor of Jammu University Prof Manoj Kumar Dhar, during an interaction.
Lauding the VC for his keen interest in giving push to sports, Mr Singh said
the varsities can ''create wonderful players and nurture the talent in a
professional manner''.
He, however, also expressed that he will be happy,
if approached by the University authorities for his guidance for the sports
persons.
The Padma Shri athlete further said that by offering educational
courses in sports through BP Ed and MP Ed, the varsity is doing a great job in
inculcating professional sports among the students.
Moreover, advising
the institution in providing top class infra with equipped facilities, Mr Singh
asked the Vice Chancellor to formulate a comprehensive Sports Policy, to focus
on both short term and long term goals with special emphasis for honing the
skills of accomplished players.
Meanwhile, Prof Dhar ensured the
medallist that special focus will be laid on sports and calendar of activities
will be introduced for sports in the University Campus.
''The visit of
Milkha Singh in the University will surely give boost to the sports activity and
I am sure that on his advice, the Vice Chancellor, who himself is keen in giving
push to sports, will establish full fledged athletics academy with synthetic
track to produce champions,'' Ranjeet Kalra, Chairman, District Sports Council
and a senior faculty of University of Jammu expressed.
He added that
Milkha Singh have also accepted the Vice Chancellor's invitation of visiting to
the University of Jammu to interact with the faculty, students and sports
persons soon.
