National Law School of India University came into existence through a Notification under the National Law School of India University Act (Karnataka Act 22 of 1986). It signified the culmination of efforts by the Judiciary, the Bar Council of India, the Karnataka Bar Council, the Bangalore University and the Government of Karnataka to reform legal education and to establish a centre of excellence for legal education and research in India.

Eligibility
The Candidate shall have an LL.M. Degree (regular mode) from recognized University securing ‘B+’ grade or an aggregate of 55% marks or its equivalent
 
Duration
The candidates are required to carry out research for a minimum period of three years from the date of registration, which includes residential requirement as detailed in Rule VIII and submit thesis within a maximum period of five years.
 
Admission Procedure
There shall be a written test which will be on par with UGC NET / JRF exams. The candidates will be selected by the P.G. Council upon consideration of the research proposal and the report submitted by the expert panel on the presentation.
