Sanatana Dharma College is an Arts and Science college established in 1946 and affiliated to the University of Kerala. It is a premier higher education institution that has made a remarkable contribution to the cultural and intellectual climate of Alappuzha. The college is famed for its excellent and committed faculty and modernized infrastructure facilities. A variety of conventional as well as new generation courses in the under-graduate and post-graduate levels are on offer. Among the twelve teaching departments Zoology, Botany and Commerce are research departments that offer Ph.D. programmes. It also boasts of a long list of illustrious persons from all walks of life who are the alumni of the college. The college is recognized by UGC under 2(f) and 12(B). The NAAC re-accredited the college with A grade and CGPA of 3.14 during March 2011.

Hostel Facilities for girl students with separate section for postgraduate students. The hostel has a mess room and basic recreational facilities. Around 100 students get accommodation in the hostel. A teacher in the college functions as the warden.
The college has a very active centre for career guidance and placement that helps students by helping them to find out suitable educational and career options available. Prospective employers conduct regular seminars on the recent career opportunities. They also select students through interviews. Students get information about various courses conducted by universities all over India, scholarships, competitive examinations, and job opportunities from the centre.
