Steps being taken to covert Engineering college into technical university

Puducherry Education Minister Kamalakannan today said that all steps are being taken to convert the Pondicherry Engineering college into a technical university in one year. Speaking at a function organised at the Pondicherry Engineering college to mark the commencement of the first year B.Tech classes, Mr.Kamalakannan said the Pondicherry Engineering college which started 32 years back had achieved a distinction as one of the best college among thousands of colleges in the country.

Stating that Puducherry has become a hub of education, Mr Kamalakannan called upon the students to utilize the professors for developing their skills.The Pondicherry Engineering college is having qualified professors and all other facilities for the students,he added.The students were admitted on the basis of merit, he said adding that apart from students from the four regions of the Union Territory, 15 students from other states who were qualified for admission in the entrance examination are also studying here. He said sanction has been given for Rs.27 crore for the construction of buildings of the university and the central funds is being awaited .

Due to some unavoidable circumstances, the college could not be converted into a technical university. Efforts are being taken to execute the same before the end of this academic year, he added. Mr Kamalakannan also said that there is no tution fees in the college and there was a complaint that hostel charges are high. Hence, steps are being taken to reduce the hostel fees by 50 per cent which is now Rs.60,000. Presently, the salary for the hostel workers are being collected from the students.The system would be changed and the government would provide them salary, the Minister said.

Speaking on the occasion, Revenue Minister M O H F Shajahan said that the Pondicherry Enginerring college is presently ranked 40th in the all India level and steps should be taken to bring it within ten ranks.
