Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959.

Open to students with a strong masters level background in physics. Exceptional students with a B.Tech/BE degree are also eligible for this program.
 
Admission Procedure
The students are selected through a written test and interview conducted by the department. Those who have qualified at lease one of GATE/JEST/NET are eligible to apply.

Other Details
Students coming in with a master degree need to take minimum of two core courses and two elective courses . The doctoral committee could prescribe more courses if required. Students entering the Ph.D. program directly after their BE/B.Tech. should take a minimum of ten courses which include two core, two courses on special topics related to the student's thesis work and six electives. In all cases comprehensive viva is conducted at the end of first year.
