Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (commonly known as IIT Roorkee or IITR), formerly the University of Roorkee (1948-2001) and the Thomason College of Civil Engineering (1853-1948), is a public university located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India. Established in 1847 in British India by the then lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason, it was given university status in 1949 and was converted into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in 2001, thus becoming the seventh IIT to be declared.
Mahatma Gandhi Central Library of the Institute finds a unique place in the academic library scenario in this part of the world. It is an amalgamation of the classic and the modern.The Library contains around 4 lacs documents in print in its collection including 2 lacs+ Books, 60000+ Text book ,50,000 bound volumes of Journals,50,000 books in department Library,& 10,000+ books in refernce section. It's e-resource collection is very robust which comprises of 15,000+ current e-journals, 2 lacs+ back volumes of e-journals, 2 lacs+ standards and patents, 2 Million theses and dissertations (including Pro Quest database), 35,000+ e-books, and Access to World eBook Library (WeL). MGCL provides access of eBooks from Elsevier Science, Springer, CRC Press, CUP, OUP, John Wiley, Tata McGraw-Hill, & Pearson Education. Access for Print and Online journals are available from all major Societies publishers viz. ASCE, ASME, ACS, AIP, APS, AMS, AICHE, IEEE, ASM, RSC, RS, AAAS etc. and all major STM publishers like Elsevier Science/T&F/CUP/ OUP/Springer/John Wiley.
Hostel Facility
The campus has 16 hostels, of which three (Sarojini, Kasturba and Indira) are occupied by girls. Hostels may accommodate undergraduate and graduate students along with doctoral students. Students are assigned to hostels by the school administration after their freshmen year. There are six hostels for married students, doctoral students and foreign students. Each bhawan has a mess. Mess administration consists of a staff advisor, a chief advisor, and a student mess secretary.
Scholarship Facility
The Institute offers merit-cum-means scholarship to 25% of undergraduate students. Several other scholarships are announced from time to time. Bank loans are also easily available whenever required. Financial help is provided as Institute free studentship and scholarships to undergraduate students belonging to the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.
