Government First Grade College for Women, Vijayanagar, Mysore-18, had its humble beginning in June, 2005 with a strength of 45 students in a temporary rented building attached to a small private school in Vijayanagar, II Stage, Mysore. Since then, the College has come a long way with its own set of problems and accomplished phenomenal growth. It has, no doubt, become a Womenís College to reckon with, 8 kilometers away from the prestigious Maharaniís College in Mysore, with a studentsí strength of 547 in 2012-13. The College caters to the needs of the under-privileged students living in Mysore as also at the periphery of Mysore. The college has its own building which houses the Principalís Office, the Arts and Science Faculty, the Science laboratory and the Library for a studentsí strength of 200 and the Commerce faculty is in a school building and has a studentsí strength of 347. As of now, the building work is completed and it is hoped that the College will serve the needs of students in the near future and the strength of the College too, is expected to increase in the coming years. There are 6 to 8 P.U. Colleges in the vicinity. Now all the courses of the college are housed in a single full-fledged building. The strength of the college, as of now, is 496. Interestingly, this is the only Government college which provides multi-disciplinary streams to women in Mysore.
