The University of North Bengal was established by Act of the Legislature of West Bengal in 1962 and assigned the mandate of providing teaching,training and research in various branches of advanced learning , and promoting the dissemination of knowledge to fulfill growing socio-economic and technical manpower needs in the six North Bengal districts and the neighbouring state of Sikkim . The campus occupies an area of about 330 acres 9 km outside Siliguri and Bagdogra Airport in the Terai region of Darjeeling district.The University Act was revised under West Bengal Act of XXV of 1981 and it came into force with effect from September 16 , 1981.
The University Library was established along-with the Establishment of the University in 1962 in order to meet the academic and research needs of the Teachers, Research scholars and the students.
The University Library provides books, journals as well as current information on various topics to fulfill the need of the University communities. Since inception of the University, the library has been serving the various components of the university community viz. teachers, research scholars, students, officers and staff towards the fulfillment of their objectives.
Museum:The Akshaya Kumar Maitreya Heritage Museum incorporating Raja Rajaram Museum Collection was established in the University of North Bengal in February 1965. The Museum has now become a rich repository of collection in sculpture, coins, paintings, manuscripts etc. depicting the history and Heritage of North Bengal. It functions as a regional museum and is one of the few University Museums in India. The main objects of the Museum are to collect, preserve and study archaeological relics lying scattered in the six Districts of North Bengal and Sub-Himalayan Region.
Computer Centre: The Computer Centre, University of North Bengal, the leading Central Facility of this University, established in April, 1983 (UGC Reference F.55-5/83(T-II) dated 16th April 1983), is providing different services to the Teachers, Research Scholars, Students and the Administration of the University of North Bengal relating to 1) teaching, training& research2) Local Area Network (LAN) and 3) various computing facilities.

There are four boys hostel and five girls hostel and an international hostel for foreign students
