The college was named Shrimati Indira Gandhi College in respectful remembrance of our dynamic former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and was formally inaugurated by our former president and most illustrious alumnus of National College, His Excellency Shri. R.Venkataraman, the then Vice-President of India on 17th Nov ’84. His Excellency was pleased to visit the college once again on 25th March ’87, to unveil the size statue of Indira Gandhi installed near the western gate of the college. It was this statue of Indiraji, that was garlanded by her illustrious son and successor – Prime Minister Honb’le Rajiv Gandhi on 6th August ‘88during his visit to Tiruchirappalli.
LIBRARY - The computerized Library information Service to all the libraries General, MCA and MBA is being done with Library Automation Software. More than 41646 Volumes have been stored as data. Around 265 Journals and Magazines (National and International) have been subscribed.
SPORTS FACILITIES - Facilities for various Games and Sports are provided with required privacy to the students. There is a very big playground in which track and field events are conducted. Indoor games like Table tennis, Carrom, Chess etc are provided and interested students are trained. Some of our students have represented the university the State & National level as well.
Hostel Facility
There are three multi-storeyed Hostels- Kodiyalam Hostel, New Hostel and Kamala Nehru Hostel and three Dining Halls - with modern facilities, well funished and a good vegetarian mess. There is a provision for the inmates to learn Hindi, Music, Sewing and Typewriting during their free hours.
