Lakhimpur Girls’ th College, affiliated to Dibrugarh University, was established on 16 Aug. 1972 as one of the first institutions imparting higher education to women in the entire north bank of the river Brahmaputra in upper Assam. It has been maintaining consistently high academic standard since its inception and presently it has been recognized as one of the premier institutions of the state. It has produced women who have excelled in various fields. Recognized by the UGC under section 2(f) on 13-12-1978, the college was brought under the deficit system of grants-in-aid in 1979 with Arts stream only. Following the permanent affiliation accorded to it from Dibrugarh University on 07-3-84 it got recognized from the UGC under section 12(A) on 05-07-84. Shifted to the present permanent site on 08-12-84, the college has remarkably been flourishing. The science stream, introduced in 1990-91, was brought under the deficit system of grants-in-aid in 1998. The college also introduced Distance Education from the 2008-09 session with Degree, Diploma and Certificate courses in various subjects under K. K. Handiqui State Open University and IGNOU. It has been accorded with a Block Technology Centre for computer training by the District Administration in collaboration with NIC. The various career oriented courses and the courses in Music and Fine Arts are functioning well. And more significantly, the college has introduced a few career oriented course in Fashion Designing, Dietetics, Ornamental Fishes and Tour and Travel Services.
The Study Centre in the Central Library has sitting arrangement for more than 80 persons. There are separate arrangement for the Teachers and the students. The College Canteen was established in 1978 in a small room beside the Students'' Common room. A student of our College named Mrs. Meera Sona took the responsibility of Managing the Canteen. During the Assam Movement of 1979-1980, the College was closed for a year and Mrs. Sona could not continue to render her service . During the month of Examination from February to July the transaction in the Canteen was very poor. Then Mr. Jiten Bharali, the present accountant of the college took the responsibility of running the canteen for nine months. Due to various difficulties he could not continue and sold all the belongings of the canteen at Rs. 900.00 only to the then cook of canteen Mr. Lakshan Dutta. Mr. Dutta with his wife Mrs. Sriti Kona Dutta ran the Canteen properly. Mr. Dutta passed away on 23rd March 1996. Since then Mrs. Sriti Kona Dutta has been the manager of the Canteen. In January 1996 the authority constructed a new spacious room for the canteen and charged a monthly rent of Rs. 100.00 to the Manager.
Hostel Facility
The Hostel of the College accommodates 160 students. From the beginning since 1976 the hostel of the College was running in rented houses. Application forms for Hostel seats are available in College Office with the Prospectus.
