Government College Kottayam was established by the Government of Kerala in 1972. The College was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Kerala, Hon. Sri. C. Achuthamenon. Foundation for new building was laid in 1976 and was inaugurated in 1980.
The College Library has a collection of more than 34000 books. The Library subscribes to various national and international journals and most of the popular newspapers and periodicals in English and Malayalam. The Library is fully automated with the SOUL Library Management Software. More titles are regularly added to the collection every year.

Scholarship Facility
Students of Government College Kottayam are eligible to avail various scholarships awarded by State and Central Governments such as Post Matric Scholarship, Central Sector Scholarship, State Merit Scholarship etc. Details of all scholarships are available at the DCE Scholarship website. All eligible students can also avail fee concessions and stipends as per government norms.
The Career Guidance and Placement Cell coordinates the placement and career guidance activities of various departments. The cell conducts recruitment drives for students in collaboration with industry/other institutions. The cell also conducts career guidance seminars and workshops for students.
