The Govt. College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram is one of the leading educational institutions in Kerala. It was started as the Sircar Girl’s School, in 1864 by the Royal family of Travancore
The Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, has, for over a hundred years, been one of the leading educational institutions in Kerala and also a pioneering institution in the field of higher education of women. In 1952, degree courses were introduced in Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Philosophy, Malayalam and Sanskrit. From the early 1970s, the college embarked on a phase of expansion. New courses were introduced regularly and departments upgraded to P.G departments. Today the College has 22 teaching departments that conduct 16 U.G. courses and 17 P.G. courses. Eight of the departments are identified as research departments. We have over 2400 regular students. The College has strength of 159 teachers and 55 non-teaching staff members.
Canteen
Central Library- It contains significant collection of early and rare books. This college library is the oldest (estd.in 1897) and has big collection of books and periodicals. Each our department has it own internal department library holding more than 20,000 books and subject periodicals.
Continuing Education Sub Centre- Continuing Education Sub Centre, Govt College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram was started on October 8th 2001 under Center for Continuing Education, Kerala. This centre is being governed by a Manager from among the senior teachers of the College and an Advisory Committee headed by the Principal. At present, the Sub Centre is functioning in its own building. Now we have a variety of 317 courses like Computer, Communicative English, Beautician, Fashion Designing, Painting, Music Yoga, and other Job Oriented Courses including craft meant for various age group of women candidates. Other than these courses, we are offering coaching for Bank test, PSC test, IELTS and TOEFL.
Counseling Centre
EDUSAT-EDUSAT facility is available in the seminar Hall of our college and is well equipped to receive and respond to the classes of resource persons. EDUSAT facility is supported by Dept. of collegiate education and has lectures on every Tuesday and Thursday.
