Chandmal Tarachand Bora Arts, Commerce and Science College, Shirur, affiliated to the Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly University of Pune) was established in 1968 by Shirur Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, a local educational trust, with the primary aim of providing quality higher education to the educationally and socially backward local community. The college is situated in a predominantly agrarian community consisting largely of economically and socially backward rural and tribal population. The Shirur Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was initiated by a few philanthropists and social visionaries to spread education among the local population. In this context the Vision of the College is to become an excellent centre of higher education, of teaching and research providing quality education that is technically advanced, socially and morally relevant particularly to the rural students, and to groom them to face the challenges of the emerging global scenario and to benefit from growing economic opportunities. In the early years, the college primarily tried to provide educational opportunities to the local population that could not afford going to the urban centers for higher education. In that context the college began by offering undergraduate courses in Arts and Commerce. But over the decades the socio-economic scenario has changed considerably and the college has been trying to tune its programmes and activities according to the new requirements. Today it is a leading educational institution under the Savitribai Phule Pune University offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in different faculties apart from being a research centre in three subjects. The college offers 46 courses in different subjects and is also a study centre of Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU). The college has 69 fully qualified faculty members who are seriously engaged in their teaching research and extension activities. Many of our teachers possess M.Phil and Ph.D qualifications and their research output has been highly commendable. This is reflected in the fact that so far 64 research projects have been completed by faculty members since the last assessment and accreditation of the college. They have also made valuable contributions in their respective subjects by participating in large numbers of seminars and conferences and also by publishing research materials in different forms. Many of our faculty members have won several prestigious honors and awards for their achievements.
