The Government of Tamil Nadu established Tamil Nadu Maritime Academy in the year of 1998 with the sole purpose of improving the quality of Maritime Training so as to offer better opportunity to the aspiring youngmen in the maritime field. The running of this academy has been transferred from the control of Poompuhar Shipping Corporation Limited to the control of Tamil Nadu Maritime Board. The scope and aim of this academy is to train SSLC/ plus two passed students to initially become crew members on Merchant Navy vessels and with subsequent training to become a captain of Merchant Navy vessels.The exit examination of this academy is conducted by the Board of Examinations for Seafarers, Mumbai and this academy has been consistently achieving 100 % pass.
The Academy has well furnished classrooms with hostel specially designed for simulating ship living conditions of two-tier berths. Laminated displays of different types of ships, machineries and nautical equipments including ships models are exhibited in the classrooms. A spacious dining hall with pantry and kitchen takes care of the catering requirements of all the trainees. Indoor and Outdoor recreation facilities are available inside the campus
