While promising to work closely with the Union government on economic reforms, Institute of Charted Accountants of India (ICAI) President Nilesh S Vikamsey today announced that the ICAI would introduce a certificate course on Goods and Services Tax (GST), within a month of it becoming a law. Talking to reporters on his first visit to the city, he said "ICAI has always lend a helpful hand to the Union government in improving the economic performance of the country.'' ''We are glad that accounting got noticed in Union Budget for the first time'', he added.
On GST, he said "ICAI has provided the Government with lot of suggestions of which 47 have been accepted.'' ''We are planning to work hand in hand with both the Central and State Governments and provide them with helpful suggestions on implementing the GST laws'', he said. Mr Nilesh said tge ICAI plans to introduce a Certificate Course on GST within one month of enactment of the law and also a publication on GST Act. ''Earlier we have been offering Certificate Course on Service Tax'', he added.
He said "opening of the ICAI's 30th Chapter at San Francisco has been approved by the Council and it will be inaugurated on March 4.'' Mr Nilesh efforts were on to open chapters at Netherlands. ''We are in talks with CPA Canada for an MoU, so as to benefit the Indian Chartered Accountancy community'', he said. He said in an effort to foster goodwill and relationship between various countries, the ICAI would host the next meeting of Emerging Economies Group in May 2017 in India. Coinciding with the meeting, it was also proposed to hold a stakeholders meet to discuss the emerging issues of accounting, he added. To a question, he said the recent initiatives for students, included revision of Scheme of Education and Training, preparation of Study Material for all levels. ''We are working to provide Study Material for the revised new scheme Foundation Course in e-Book format to enable students to study on mobile devices like tablets and smartphones.'', he said, adding, the regional offices and branches of ICAI wereasked to conduct campus placements that will result in brand building and providea connectivity to the students and firms/industry.
