Jawharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) Puducherry has been ranked number one among medical institutions in South India by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for 2018.
According to a Jipmer release here on Thursday, the institution has been ranked number four among government medical institions in the country and number six overall (including Private medical institutions) in the country. NIRF Ranking is being done by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development and was started in the year 2016. For the first time, this year medical and dental colleges were also ranked by NIRF.
The rankings assume significance as performance of institutions has been linked with "Institutions of Eminence" scheme. Ranking promotes competition among the Universities and drive them to strive for excellence. The government has also started a scheme called 'institutions of Eminence' in which 20 institutions both public and private would be selected on challenge method and they would be actively supported to come up in the global rankings.
In NIRF, to promote Research and Development in Higher Education, 'Research and Professional Practices' has been given the highest weightage of 40 per cent , for ranking universities. The number of institutions participating in the rankings has risen by over 1,000 this year, the release said. According to National Board of Accreditation sources, apart from the government institutions, a large number of private higher education institutions have joined the rankings this year who were not part of the process earlier.
The ranking, before declaring, takes into various parameters like research activities, publications, academics, financial status etc, the release added.
