Nagaland Education Dept. takes measures for drop-out students

In the wake of increasing drop out in Upper Primary and Secondary levels in Nagaland Government schools, the Director of School Education (DoSE) Wonthungo Tsopoe, as advised by Ministry of Human Resource Development, has issued a slew of measures to all Sub-Divisional Education Officers (SDEOs).

Official sources said in the directive, the SDEOs are to identify feeder Government Primary Schools of each Government Middle Schools under their jurisdiction and also notify the list of Government Middle Schools (GMS) and feeder Government Primary Schools (GPS). All head teachers and teacher-in-charge are to be instructed that all qualified Class V students from feeder schools are to be automatically admitted to Class VI of the respective GMS under whose jurisdiction the feeder school fell. Teachers-in charge of GPS are to submit the required documents such as PCT of qualified Class V students to the Head Teacher of GMS where the students are to be automatically admitted.

Further, DoSE has directed that no GMS shall deny admission to qualified Class V students coming from the feeder GPS. Also the teacher-in-charges shall inform parents about GMS where their children are to be automatically admitted to Class VI. The SDEOs shall also call the teacher-in-charge, head teacher and class teachers of Classes V & VI under their jurisdiction for a meeting and explain the provisions as stated above (informing parents whose children were to be automatically admitted to Class VI). The above shall also explain the following steps to be undertaken by class teachers and school heads.

Further, all class V class teachers will visit the residences of those class V qualified students, who were not joining class VI and encourage them to continue studies, besides supervising the transition of students from class V to VI and remove all the hurdles in the process. The teachers in charge have also been asked to prepare a list of students who had passed class V but had not joined class VI in spite of all efforts and submit it to the SDEOs. The SDEOs would discuss the issue with the respective deputy commissioners, district education officers and director of school education for indentifying the further course of action that could be taken to encourage the students to rejoin in class VI. The DoSE explained that as per the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development advisory, the Deputy Commissioners were responsible for ensuring automatic admission of all qualified class V students in an upper primary school. Therefore, it instructed all SDEOs to work in close association with the district administration in this regard. Similar measures would be adopted by the District Education Officers for increasing the transition rate from class VIII to Class IX, sources said.
