Breaking the tradition, Uttar Pradesh Sainik School, which has been an all boys institution, has now given entry to girls from this academic session.
Lucknow and Manipur are the two Sainik schools in the country where girls have been admitted for the first time from this session.
Altogether 15 girls students have joined the Sainik school in class IX on April 17.
Sainik School Registrar Lt Col U P Singh said here on Sunday that the girls would be given military and academic training in the school.
''The positive message which will go in the society is that of women empowerment and creation of an inclination amongst girls to join the armed forces,'' he said. ''Women are making a mark in all the fields and they are a part of all the three branches of defence forces. We also have a female Defence Minister. The need of the hour is that women are given opportunities to move forward,'' he added.
Mr Singh said that the Lucknow Sainik School was established in 1960 by the Uttar Pradesh government and it became a role model for the entire country.
"As many as 28 Sainik Schools were established across the country later on. This is the only school which is under the state government while all others are under the Union Ministry of Defence,'' the registrar said. ''A proper entrance test was conducted for these girl students. Over 2,500 girls appeared in the examination and 15 were selected after a written test, interview and medical test,'' he added. Mr Singh said there were some apprehensions in the beginning but the students and their parents later became confident. ''We have the faculty consisting of academic teachers as well as those from the Army and this kind of training helps in holistic development of children,'' he said.
