The Govt. College Chittur was founded on August 11, 1947 in response to an increasing demand for higher education opportunities in the erstwhile state of Cochin. The College symbolizes the hopes and aspirations of the public and is a milestone in the history of Palakkad. From its humble beginning as a Junior College in 1947, the institution slowly and steadily grew into a post-graduate college in 1995.The college was accredited with B+ by the NAAC in 2009 (CGPA 2.79). The college is supported by the DST FIST grant of 96 Lakhs from 2013 onwards.
EDUSAT :Govt College Chittur has setup EDUSAT facility in 2011 with the aid from Govt of Kerala, which facilitates live streaming of classes by experts. It has a fully air conditioned hall with seating capacity of 50, modern amenities such as LCD projector and interactive smart board. Classes are streamed from the Edusat studio Thiruvananthapuram on various subjects on Tuesday and Thursday, every week.
Music Concert Hall:The Department of Music has a well equipped Music Concert Hall which caters to the needs of students to enable the conduction of music concerts & other programmes which are beneficial to the students. The Music Concert Hall was built with the financial aid of Rs.18 lakhs from the local MLA fund of Sri. K. Achuthan, MLA, Chittur in connection with the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Department of Music in the year 2007-08.

Spoken Tutorial:Students from different Departments of the college have registered for various courses under the Spoken Tutorial – an initiative of National Mission on Education through ICT, MHRD, Govt. of India, to promote IT literacy through Open Source Software. The free online video courses are offered by IIT Bombay.

library : The College library is fully digitized and having a stack strength of approximately 90000 books and subscribing to around 30 research journals. Apart, the library has UGC’s INFLIBNET subscription through which almost 3000 journals and e books can be accessed. Efforts are on to make the library fully automated.
