The Indian Registry of Pathology (IRP) was established in 1965 under the auspices of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in New Delhi, India as a Centre for collection and distribution of teaching material in pathology. The Registry was renamed in 1980 as the National Institute of Pathology (IOP) in view of its expanded scope and activities.Institute is recognized as Institute of Excellence by Ministry of Health & FW and running courses for short-term training for technicians and pathologists for WHO.

The Institute imparts long term residential training leading to the Post-Graduate Level Training Programme in the speciality of Pathology. The Institute has been recognized by the National Board of Examinations, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare for training of students in the discipline of Pathology. This residential training programme of students with the bachelor degree in Medicine involves training for a period of three years while the training period for the students with post-graduate diploma in Pathology is for a period of two years
