Tata College, Chaibasa, a premier institute of higher education came into being on the eve of 1951 at Zila School, Chaibasa and the foundation of the present campus was laid by the then Chief Minister of Bihar, Dr. Srikrishna Singh on January 27, 1954. The existing sprawling campus buildings viz. Arts & Science Blocks, Administrative Unit, Hostels, Teachers’ Quarters, Indoor Stadium, Gymnasiums and Play Grounds spread over an area of 38 acres of land donated by the local villagers with the leadership of Late Sri P.C. Birua, the founder Secretary, was designed and constructed by the Tata Industrial House. The College became a Constituent Unit of Ranchi University in the year 1961. In 2005 the college was provincialized along with other 188 colleges by the government of Jharkhand. Kolhan University was established in 2009 at Chaibasa and the college became a constitute unit of the university.
