Government Serchhip College

Govt. Serchhip College is an Under Graduate degree college established in 1973. It was affiliated to North Eastern Hill University in 1975. The college was provincialised on 1st January 1989 and subsequently affiliated to Mizoram University when the university was established in 2001. The college was declared accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) on 8th January 2011 with ‘B’ Grade status and reaccredited on 2016 with ‘B+’ Grade. The college has also been placed under section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956 vide letter No.F.No.8-93/86 (CPP-1) at 27.10.1990.The college began as a joint endeavour of enthusiastic citizens of Serchhip and Chhiahtlang villages. A few prominent individuals of these areas shared the vision of a college as to facilitate easy access to higher education of younger generations of Serchhip and other adjoining villages. On 2nd November 1972, an ad hoc body was formed to undertake necessary initiatives and consequently a series of fund raising drives were undertaken through public donations, charitable contributions of dedicated men, auctioning of lands and firm sites etc. When the money procured through various sources amounted to 7000 rupees, the Managing Board boldly decided to open the college the following year.

Library: The College Library was started with a meagre collection in a congested room in 1978 and was initially looked after by one Lecturer incharge.Since 1985 the library has been single-handedly managed by the Library Assistant.With the appointment of a full-fledged College Librarian enjoying UGC payscale in 2005 the library has been managed by the Librarian with 3 (three) supporting staff. The Govt. Serchhip College library is thus marching forward so as to achieve its objectives as well as to cater the changing, increasing and diversified information needs of the users.As per the preferences laid down by the educational experts the College has fortunately a separate library building measuring a plinth area of 2112 Sq.feet The library building was constructed with the financial assistance received from the UGC during IX Plan.It has also been extended and renovated during XI Plan with the assistance from the same agency.The building is centrally located within the Campus which is easily approachable from various directions.It is also extendable both horizontally and vertically so as to accomodate both the growing users and library resources for many years to come.
