School of Indian Legal Thought was established by the Mahatma Gandhi University as one of its regular teaching department and research center in 1989. The school visualised a comprehensive and integrated programme of legal education. The school offers three year and five year LL.B courses, LL.M and PH.D programme. The LL.B courses as provided for by the school, has been accorded permanent affiliation and recognition by the Bar Council of India in 1992. (Vide Letter No. 1992(LE/Mtgl)) dated 9the July 1992 of Bar Council of India. The school becomes functional in the academic year 1991-92 with a three year LL.B programme. In the academic year 1994-95 as part of its programme of academic expansion, the school began the Five year LL.B (Hons) degree course. The school also started LLM and PhD programme in the same academic year. Thus, the school becomes a full-fledged regular Post-Graduate and Research Department of the University for imparting legal education. The school provides 3 year LLB semester regular course conducted between 4 pm to 9 pm.
The school is situated at the Surykalady Hills about 4 kms from Kottayam town. Total Plinth Area of the School Building is about 57.95 sqm. The school has established Smart Class Room with all technical gadgets and facilities in order to have high quality experience of virtual class room platform.
Among other facilities the School has in its building a Canteen functional from 8 am to 8 pm. From Light refreshments to Meals are available there.
