School of Maritime Studies is situated at Thalambur, Chennai, near Navalur on the IT Highway of Tamilnadu, off the old Mahabalipuram Road. Approved by DG Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India,is a course leading to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency, awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, after six months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant Naval ships anywhere in the world. ; Candidate should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with minimum unaided vision 6/12 in each eye, and with no colour blindness.

The first year of the HND Marine Engineering Course will be conducted at VAMET, Chennai, and the second year of study will be conducted at GCNS, Glasgow. Phase 1 is of 39 weeks at VAMET, followed by 36 weeks at GCNS. Thereafter, 6 months of sea service are required to qualify for Engineer Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency (earlier known as Class 4 Certificate) examinations in the UK.; Medical Standard : Candidate should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with minimum unaided vision 6/12 in each eye, and with no colour blindness.
