Mahatma Gandhi Government Arts College is the premier higher educational institution of the Mahe region and the present campus is located in a serene, picturesque and sprawling area at Mount Vera, Chalakkara, Mahe. It blossomed as the outcome of the efforts of the Puducherry administration with the avowed objective of imparting quality education in Arts, Humanities and Science to all the constituent units of the Union Territory.
The College was inaugurated on the 11th of December 1970 by His Excellency, Shri. B.D. Jatti, then Lt. Governor of Puducherry. Prof. M.M. Ghani, then Vice Chancellor of the University of Calicut, unveiled the plaque during the inaugural ceremony that was presided over by Shri. M.O.H. Farook, the Honourable Chief Minister of Puducherry
The college has good infrastructural facilities, well equipped laboratories, good collection of books as well as highly qualified and experienced Faculties.
