Ananda Chandra College was established in 1942 during the turbulent years of Quit India Movement. Over the decades since then it has remained in the forefront of all the colleges of North Bengal in size, quality and performance. This college is now a pioneering seat of higher learning in the entire region of the sub-Himalayan West Bengal. The alumni of the college are now engaged in different academic, administrative and other important positions of the society. Many of them are now contributing to nation building in their respective capacities. It is a Government Sponsored College affiliated to the University of North Bengal, managed by a Governing Body under the direct control of Director of Public Instructions, West Bengal. We have produced great scientists, administrators, legal luminaries, teachers, political functionaries and bright professionals. On the basis of our achievement, the University Grants Commission, the highest authority of higher education was pleased to endorse us the category 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC Act to render us eligible generous financial grant.
Library: The Ananda Chandra College has a well established library which caters to the need of the undergraduate and post graduate students, research scholars and the faculty. It is a main source of knowledge, which is an integral and important part of our institute of higher learning. The library aims to stock all the books and periodicals that the students and faculties are expected to read and enrich literary strength. It provides a full range of high quality services based on both print and electronic media to students, teachers, non teaching staff of Ananda Chandra College and external readers from other constituent colleges. The library functions on an open access system for the faculty members and the research scholars. But the students have only a limited access. The computerization of the library using SOUL (Software for University Libraries) Software is nearing completion and shortly all standard services like acquisition, searching and lending will be computerized.
Games and Sports Facilities: The college has very good infrastructure for games and sports. There is a very big gymnasium measuring more than 7200 Sq. ft. floor area and two large play grounds. All equipments for both indoor and outdoor games are available. The facility is controlled and looked after by the Department of Physical Education of the college. The college has won the champion of champions Trophy/Certificate that was handed over to us on the University Blue Day for the three consecutive year. Our students achieved commendable success in the inter Non-Govt college Athletic meet both in the District and State level as well as in the University Inter College Athletic Meet. This year, Himashree Roy, a student of Physical Education of our college participated in the inter-University Athletic Meet at Kalyani University and was awarded gold medals in 100m and 200 m events.
Placement Service Available: The college has initiated a project for looking into suitable jobs for the students by opening a Carrier Counseling Cell in the College Campus. The cell helps the students to find out the employment news from the newspapers and make them available to the students to suit their need in the employment market. The cell motivates the students to join its self employment programme. The students are asked to contact Sri Bhajan Basak, Assistant Professor of Political Science, Coordinator of the Carrier Counseling Cell for any help they need.
