Sree Narayana College, Punalur is a centre of higher education in the eastern alcove of Kollam district in Kerala. The institution was established in devout memory of Sree Narayana Guru, a saint, poet, philosopher and one of the greatest social reformers Kerala has ever produced. The College is managed by the Sree Narayana Trusts, Kollam, one of the leading educational agencies in the state. It is affiliated to the University of Kerala, and has 12 B recognition from the UGC and ‘B’ Grade accreditation from the NAAC.
The college offers degree courses in Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Mathematics, Commerce and History. A vocational course in B.A. Communicative English was introduced in 1998-99. At the Post-Graduate level, the college offers M.Sc. in Chemistry and Mathematics.
Central Library:
The college has a fully computerised general library with over 20,000 books, 40 journals and periodicals and six newspapers.
Departmental Libraries:
The various departments are equipped with their own libraries, for ready reference whenever necessary.
Laboratories
The science departments are well equipped with laboratories for UG and/PG classes.
Auditorium:
The college has an aesthetically constructed auditorium with a seating capacity of 1000 persons. It has an onstage, guest room and toilet along with a green room.
Seminar Hall:
The seminar hall is well-designed with a seating capacity for 250 participants. It is well equipped with all the latest audio-visual facilities, including interactive board facility.
IT Lab:
The IT lab is well-equipped with 20 computers.
Language Lab:
The language lab under the direction of a faculty member capable of instructing twelve students simultaneously provides coaching to students of the Communicative English classes along with the students of the spoken English classes.
Medical inspection:
A sick room has been set up in the college to provide first aid facilities to students and staff in case of emergency requirement. A Medical Officer visits the college whenever required. In emergencies, cases are referred to Sankar’s Hospital, Punalur.
Counselling Centre:
A Drug Surveillance and counselling unit functions as a wing of N.S.S of this college. This unit creates a public awareness against the use of drugs and alcohol.
Career Guidance and Placement Cell:
The Career Guidance and placement cell is intended to guide students and inform them of the various avenues of employment available, according to their abilitites, qualification and aptitude.
Gymnasium:
A modern multi-gymnasium and health club functions in the college. It can be used by twenty body builders simultaneously.
Other sports facilities :
The college has an Indoor Shuttle Badminton Court, Basket Ball Court, Volley Ball Court, Foot Ball Court, 200 meters Track for athletic Events, Hand Ball Court and Cricket Field.
Quadrangle for meetings & events:
The spacious quadrangle serves as an open space for General Meetings and events.
College canteen:
A modern canteen and kitchen functions in the college from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, catering to the needs of the students and members of the staff of the college. It provides hygienically prepared vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes at subsidised rates.
Hostel Facility
Women’s Hostel
The college has a Ladies Hostel located within the campus with facilities to accommodate 25 inmates and a warden. The hostel has a spacious dining room and other amenities. The ladies hostel was constructed by availing UGC assistance during the IX plan. Our principal Prof. VS Lee is the Warden of the hostel and Prof. S. Komalavally (Former Principal of our college) is the Deputy Warden.
A newly constructed Ladies Hostel by availing UGC assistance during the XI plan is being inaugurated by our Manager Sri. Vellappally Natesan on the 22nd of May 2012. It has all modern facilities and can accommodate 80 or more inmates.
Scholarship Facility
1.National Loan Scholarship:
Given to Indian Nationals for all UG and PG courses. Those who gain 50 % aggregate marks in S.S.L.C or +2 examinations in the first attempt are eligible .Income limit is Rs.25000/- for under graduates .for others no income limit. Student who get scholarships/Stipend under any other scheme are not eligible.
2. Kerala University Merit Scholarship.:
Students who obtain at least 50% marks in the Plus-Two / UG examination in the first attempt are eligible. Scholarship amount is Rs.1250/- per year for UG and Rs.1500/- per year for PG.
3. Govt. of India National Merit Scholarship:
Eligibility is First class in the qualifying examination. Those who top the merit list within the quota allotted to the state will be eligible, subject to certain conditions. Scholarship amount is Rs.500/- per year for UG and Rs.750/- per year for PG. Those who have passed the qualifying examination in the year prior to the year of award will not be eligible. Students enjoying any other scholarship or stipend will not considered for the award but they can enjoy fee concession
4. Kerala State Higher Education Scholarship:
The required minimum percentage of marks for scholarships would be pass for ST, 45% for science and 40% for other subjects in the case of SC students. Students in General category need to score 50% for science and 45% for other subjects. The Scholarships would be given for a 5-year period starting with first-degree and ending with final year postgraduate education. The annual scholarship given to a student would be increased incrementally from Rs.12000 to Rs.60000 as he/she moves from the first year degree course to the final year postgraduate course. Where the beneficiary is a physically challenged person, the scholarship amount would be 25% more than the usual amount to take care of his/her special needs. Only persons with 40% disability or more would be considered as physically challenged for the purpose of the award of the scholarship. Scholarships under this scheme will not be awarded to a student who receives any scholarship / stipend other than fee concession for a course of study. However, students belonging to SC/ST category are exempted from this. Since the number of scholarships is limited, the award will be made on the basis of merit in each category in accordance with criteria laid down by the Higher Education Council.
5. Student’s Aid Fund Scholarship:
This scholarship is aimed at helping students who find it difficult to pursue studies due to financial problems. The amount is Rs 1000/ for degree students and Rs 1500/ for PG students. Annual Income Limit of parents is Rs.25,000/-.
6. Students’ Group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme (SGPAIS):
This scheme covers medical expenses due to accidents up to Rs.25,000/- (Rupees twenty five thousand only) and death claim up to Rs. 1,00,000/- (Rupees one lakh only) to regular students. The premium is Rs. 25/ per student. Principals/Directors/HODs shall forward claim papers to the Director, Department of Student Services, University of Kerala, PMG Junction, Thiruvananthapuram.
7. Kerala University Aspire scholarship:
PG students of Affiliated colleges and departments can apply for Aspire scholarship of Kerala University. Selected candidates will be enrolled for Short term Project/ Internship inside or outside Kerala State. Scholarship fee inside Kerala will be Rs. 4000/- pm and Rs.5000/- for outside the state, for a period of 1 month. The scholarship can be held concurrently with any other fellowship/scholars. The candidate can also choose premier institutions like CDS, RCC etc as the host institution.
8. Post gratuate Indira Gandhi scholarship for single girl child (UGC):
The scheme is applicable to any regular PG student who is a single girl child and can be availed only during the first year of PG course. The value of scholarship is Rs.2000 per month for a period of two years and no tuition fees will be charged.
9. The Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarships 2011:
Interest free loan scholarships to Indian students with a consistently good academic record. The amount of scholarship, up to a maximum of Rs. Ten Lakhs, and is decided as per the assessment of the Foundation. Graduates of a recognized Indian university with a consistently good academic record and students in the final year of the degree course, or those awaiting results can apply.
10. Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships for College Students:
To provide financial assistance to meritorious UG/PG students from low-income families to meet day-to-day expenses while pursuing higher studies. The student should have scored a minimum 80% of marks in Plus Two or equivalent, and should belong to non-creamy layer. Students enjoying any other scholarship or stipend will not considered for the award.
11. Indian Oil Sports Scholarship Scheme:
The duration of sports scholarship shall be for a period of 3 years. After the completion of one year duration period of sports scholarship; the performance of the players will be reviewed based on his performance / achievements in the State level / National level and All India Ranking tournaments, for junior / sub-juniors. Based on the same, sports scholarship will be extended for the second year.
12. Inspire Scholarship For Higher Studies:
Implemented by the Department of Science Technology (DST), New Delhi. The candidates studying UG/PG courses in natural/basic sciences in any one of the recognized institutions in India will be selected based on Performance in Board Examinations at X and XII levels.
13. Maulana Azad National Scholarship:
Girl Students belonging to National Minorities, (i.e. Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs, Parsis) can apply. They should have secured not less than 55% marks in Plus Two, and have a family income of less than one lakh rupees. A student getting a scholarship from any other source would not be eligible for this Scholarship.
14. The Young Talent IT Scholarship, The Dr. G.B. Scholarships Foundation:
The scholarship purports to identify deserving bright candidates who intend to pursue an IT career and support their education with a one-time scholarship of Rs. 25000/- towards furthering their opportunity in quality IT Education. Final tear UG students (BCA, B.Sc. Computer Science, B Com, B.Sc. Mathematics, etc.) or those who have consistently maintained a good academic record in the UG programme (60% and above) are eligible to apply.
15. Human Welfare Trust:
For the academically meritorious and financially needy young students to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies. These scholarships are given as an interest-free loan to the students. It needs to be repaid after graduation and gainful employment, in easy installments.
16. Post Matric Scholarships for SC /ST Students:
These scholarships will be given to SC/ST students for the study of all recognized post-matriculation or post-secondary courses pursued in recognized institutions.
17. Post Matric Scholarships for OBC Students:
These scholarships will be given to OBC students for the study of all recognized post-matriculation or post-secondary courses pursued in recognized institutions.
18. Central Sector Scholarship of Top Class Education for SC students:
SC students whose total family income is up to Rs. 2 lakhs per annum will be eligible for the scholarship. The selected students will be provided full financial support for pursuing studies beyond 12th class.
19. State Scholarship Scheme to Muslim and Nadar Girls:
Girls students belonging to OBC communities and/or BPL families of forward castes can apply. 50% marks in qualifying exam. Income limit Rs. 18,000/per year. The amount given is Rs125 per year.
20. Suvarna Jubilee Scholarship:
Should have scored 50% marks in qualifying exam and should belong to BPL family. Amount given is Rs.10,000/p.a. Application should be made after the completion of first year admissions.
21. Muslim Girls scholarship:
Muslim girls are eligible for scholarship of Rs.3000/year for UG and Rs.4000/year for PG. Income limit is Rs.2.5 lakhs. Students are advised to submit Bank account number of any nationalized Bank with IFSC code.
22. Scholarship for Blind/Deaf/Physically challenged students:
Fee, Boarding and Hostel Charges will be met. Fee concession only to those whose annual income are below Rs.25,000/p.a.
23. Central Sector Scholarship:
Students who have scored 80% marks in qualifying exam and with family income below 4.5 lakh are eligible. Amount is Rs.10,000/year for UG and Rs.20,000/year for PG.
24. Merit Scholarship to the Children of School Teachers:
Son/Daughters of Primary/Secondary School Teachers who are first year students. Amount Rs.50 per month.
25. Scholarship for proficiency in Sports:
An amount of Rs. 10,200/- per annum is given to students securing first/second/third position in individual events or winner/runners-up positions in team events in recognized International/National/and Competitions/National Schools Games.
26. Educational Concession for the children of political sufferers:
The children of freedom fighters whose annual income does not exceed Rs.3600/- are eligible. In case of I.N.A. personnel, the certificate issued by the All India I.N. Relief and Enquiry Committee New Delhi, may be obtained and submitted with the application either in original or copy attested by the District Collector or Revenue Divisional Officer instead of the certificate mentioned in column. No. 9 of the application form.
27. Educational Concession for Children of services personnels killed or disabled in action on the front:
Eligibility: Children and dependents of service personnel who have been killed or disabled in action on the front and dependents of disabled and now employed service personnel if the annual income of such service personnel does not exceed Rs. 3000/-.
28. Scholarship to the children of Fisher men:
This is only for the children of Fishermen and Fish Workers. There is no income limit Scholarship should be renewed every year. The eligible students should get counter signature on the application from the Fisheries Officer before it is submitted to the college office. The scholarship includes fees benefit, lumpsum grant and stipend.
29. Endowment:
P.K. Veena Memorial Endowment Award sponsored by the Staff Association to the outstanding student with highest score of marks in Final year B.Sc. Chemistry.
