SDM College was a brainchild of the then Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshethra Dharmasthala, Sri D Ratnavarma Heggade. Established in 1966 at a very small scale at Siddavana Gurukula was affiliated to Mysore University. It is affiliated to the Mangalore university since 1989. The college continued to grow with the introduction of Postgraduate programmes from the academic year 2001.The college attained academic autonomy from the academic year 2007.

Eligibility
Pass in B.A. degree examination of Mangalore University or equivalent with English as major/optional subject (the cognate subject), provided they have secured a minimum of 45% (40% for SC/ST/Category – I candidates) marks in the cognate subject. Candidates who have studied English as either the first or second Language at the graduate degree level for not less than two years/four semester and candidates who have studied additional English of Mangalore University for not less than two years/four semesters are also eligible to apply provided such applicants have scored not less than 60% marks in aggregate in the examination of the subject. The marks scored in the English First or Second Language examinations or Additional English examinations would be equated with the marks of optional English (the cognate subject) as follows:
1. 60% in English First Second Language equivalent to 45% of optional English (the cognate subject).
2. 60% in Additional English is equal to 48% of optional English (the cognate subject)
