Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959.

Hostel Facility
IIT Madras is a residential institute and provides accommodation to students in the hostels. There are 20 hostels, all named after the mighty rivers of India. Of the hostels, 5 are for female and 15 are for male students.
Scholarship Facility
IIT Madras encourages meritorious students by providing different types of scholarships. The Institute also helps students requiring financial help with selective scholarship amounts and fee waiver. There are also some special scholarship schemes for SC, ST and female students. Some of the scholarships are given by previous alumni of the institute while others are from companies and from the Government of India. There are procedures for obtaining the scholarship and every scholarship application is thoroughly checked and verified before being approved.
