Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959.

M.Tech in Nuclear Engineering will be offered from July 2009 session. It is an interdisciplinary program with participation of the Departments of Mechanical, Metallurgical, Chemical engineering and the Department of Physics with active cooperation of Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam.M.Tech in Nuclear Engineering will provide opportunity for the students to learn on thermal hydraulics, chemical processing, materials and physics aspects of nuclear power production.
