Established in the year 1966, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, a premier institute of Sikh Educational Society, is committed to academic excellence and a religio-cultural and social enhancement, the College was established as a tricentennial memorial to the Tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the great saint-soldier and a scholar par excellence.Chief Minister of Punjab, Sardar Partap Singh Kairon laid the foundation stone of the College on August 29, 1963. With an affiliation to Panjab University Chandigarh, and under the able guidance of first Principal S Gurbax Singh Shergill, 18 teachers were appointed to teach Pre University classes for Arts and Sciences (pre medical and pre engineering) along with three Years degree course for BA and BSc classes to the first batch of 240 students. The student strength increased to 1040 in the following session with a jump of 800 students in the first year itself. Being the first co-educational institution of this region, the College attracted progressive and capable students having produced prominent alumni like S Bir Davinder Singh, Ex Deputy Speaker Punjab Vidhaan Sabha; S Rana Gurjit Singh, Cabinet Minister Punjab and Former Member Parliament; Dr Ajaib Singh, Former Member of Commision for Minorities PPSC; Sh Suresh Arora, DGP Punjab IPS; S HPS Mahal, Session Judge and many more in its initial batches.The College continuously implements and adopts growth and expansion policies in the academic curriculum, field of research and development, placement and co-curricular activities, creative endeavours, social and religious programmes, student welfare and infrastructural development.
Library: The library is always in the process of making every effort to empower the end users with updated information. The college has been bestowed with user friendly library with diverse sections to cater to the varying information needs of the users. Additionally, this contemporary library is also utilizing the Information Communication Technology tools to provide access to the end users. The library is equipped with 10 computers connected with a server through LAN. The library is automated with SLIM 21 (System for Library Information and Management) software for quick retrieval of information. SLIM21 is the latest generation user friendly library software. It is very useful for day to day activities of library management. A broadband internet facility has also been made available for the faculty members.The library has an exclusive section for the Postgraduate departments and a large collection of religious writings and special collection pertaining to the Sikh Studies. Moreover, the library has a collection of 51,000 books (approx.), 41 subscribed journals, 20 magazines, 16 newspaper subscriptions and 365 CD ROMs. Special collection includes Panjab University Exams result gazettes upto 2005, Newspaper clipping service and employment alerts.
WI-FI Facilities: The college campus is fully wi-fi enabled. The whole campus including the hostel has been connected via 100 Mbps leased line connection.The college has 24x7 monitoring and controlling through e-surviellance.
Health Center: In 1980, SES established Bhai Kanhaiya Health Centre and since then SES is running it at different locations to acknowledge the services of Bhai Kanhaiya for his selfless service to the wounded on battle field. In 2002, it was started in SGGS College and in Nov 20, 2011 it was upgraded and inaugurated by the CM of Punjab, S Prakash Singh Badal. Services provided by the health centre include Free first-aid and emergency injections to students and staff members of all four SES institutions in the campus.
Parking Facilities: The college has ample parking space for the students as well as staff. The much needed expansion of the Parking Area was also carried out recently.
