Kurukshetra university has been running a three year M. Tech. (Applied Geophysics) since 1985.
Library: Departmental library has over 550 books on different aspects of geophysical exploration. There is also one SPG/SEG library comprising of books donated by Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG, USA) and Society of Petroleum Geophysicists. Journals named “Leading Edge” and “Geophysics” are being regularly received by the Department form SEG, USA.
Others facilities: The department has a Seismological Observatory which was established in 1972 with the support of Indian Meteorological Department, New Delhi and still continues to be part of Delhi V sat telemetry. The observatory has short period analog as well as digital recording system including short period and broad band instruments.
Teaching/ Research Labs: Computer lab- with 29 computers and two workstations
Geophysical Instrument Lab equipped with resistivity Meter, Engineering Seismograph & Syskil kid Resistivity Imaging System, Magnetometers.
Seismic Data Processing Lab equipped with softwares like PITSA, MATLAB, GEODEPTH, FOCUS
Earthquake Lab equipped with Broad Band Seismograph & Seismological Software
Fission Track Dating Lab. – Only lab in the country doing Low Temperature Thermochronology work.
Geology Lab. Equipped with rock/mineral samples, toposheets and basic instruments required for field work
Geoinformatics lab with 12 computers and one server along with Erdas Imagine image processing software and ILWIS GIS software facilities
The department has a placement cell which helps the students to get placements in different E&P companies, Research and Developments Institutes, State Organizations and Government Departments. The placement chart of the students from 1995 onwards is shown below in the form of a bar diagram.
