The Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts was established in 1982 at Mysore by the Government of Karnataka on the basis of the recommendations of the Dr. Roerich Committee, setup in 1976.
In making their recommendations, the Dr. Roerich Committee was guided by the need for reorientation of Art Education in the state of Karnataka as to make it more responsive to the changing socio-economic environment of the post-independence era. The committee took due note of the tradition of creativity and craftsmanship encouraged and nurtured by the esrstwhile Mysore State and the significant role played by the Chamarajendra Technical Institute.
The proposed Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts was envisaged by the Committee as a successor institute to the C.T.I. to carry forward its traditions of excellence & manifestation of visual arts, both traditional and contemporary.
