The Department of Communication was established in 1993 and started offering two year Masters Degree programme in Communication with objectives to teach and contour the aspiring students to meet the challenges in the pasture of media industries and communication studies. Over the past 22 years it has produced successful alumni who are well placed in media organizations in the state and outside acting as catalysts bringing changes in journalism. Many of them are also pursuing their research activities in various reputed media institutions within the country while others became media educators in this region.
EQUIPMENT: A full-fledged High Roof Multi-Camera Studio, Audio Video Edit Suits with Original Software, Graphic WorkStation with Original 3D & Animation Software, Professional Audio Recoding Sound Booth, Gyanvani Radio Station now upgraded into Online Radio Station named as Manovani. Multimedia lab with 25 Network Computers with Server Backup, Smart Class Room, Mini Theater, Professional HD recording Video Cameras, Digital SLR Cameras, Digital White Board, Overhead Projects, 3D Projection Televisions, Public Address System, Digital Podiums, multi-media unit and photocopying machine are also available in the department.
INDUSTRY-DEPARTMENT LINKAGE: The faculty of the department, who worked as journalists earlier continue to interact with the media as well as organizations. On many issues, the help of the Department was sought. The services of the faculty are utilized by the media for training their personnel and other needs. Government departments like Employee's State Insurance Corporation, Regional transport Department, Forest Department, have been utilizing the expertise of the department.
KARISAL THIRAI VIZHA - KTV: KTV is a state level symposium being organised by the Mano Media Club Manonmaniam Sundaranar University’s Communication Department since 2005. More than 500 students every year from southern India will participate and exhibit their talents.
LIBRARY: The department has about 2000 books, journals and periodicals in its own library in the Ramasubbaiyer Krishnamurthy Media Block, besides the volumes available in the University’s Central Library in the main campus. MoU have been signed with Asian Media Information and Communication Centre for the Satellite Libraryinstallation in the department library.
PUBLICATION: The Department has started its student Lab Journal ‘AbishekaTimes’in1994 later renamed as ‘Thamirabarani’during 1998. ‘UragaUravu’ development tabloid published during 1997-2000 with printing support from ‘Dinamalar’ ‘The Journal of media Studies’ a biannual refereed journal published from the department of communication since Jan 2010 The Book Readings in Communication published by the publication division of our university
Since the inception of the department, the students have found good placement in various media organizations as well as government organizations. The students have occupied executive positions, National Correspondents for News Media, running the editorial offices as well as television production centers
