System analysts are IT Professionals who specialize in analyzing and designing information systems. Systems analyst generally work in the computer department of a company providing research and information necessary to maintain an up-to-date computer system. System analysts examine IT systems and processes, and recommend improvements. A computer systems analyst study an organizations existing computer systems and procedures, and design information system solutions to help the organization operate more efficiently and effectively.Â
The main responsibility of Computer Systems Analysts is to ensure that computer systems are optimally functioning. Most computer systems analysts have a bachelors degree in Information science, Computer Science or any computer related field. Some employers prefer applicants who have a masters in computer science or business administration (MBA) with a concentration in information systems. A System Analyst must have a clear understanding of how the software, hardware and networks work together. Each business has different needs, and requires a different background. One in the health care sector needs knowledge of health management along with IT. Similarly, a Systems Analyst at an insurance company would need to know about the needs of that industry in order to design an effective system. Along with IT, taking an additional Business system analysis or related course will be an added advantage in the field.
Since this field is constantly changing, Computer Systems analysts have
to spend their entire career learning new things to keep up with the technological
changes.
If you're good at solving problems, and you've got knowledge of computer hardware, software and programming, this job could suit you. Those with advanced degrees in Computer Science or Computer engineering along with background in business may have better prospects because jobs for Computer Systems analysts often require knowledge of an organizations business needs.
Analysts work in almost every kind of organisation within the IT industry. They are often found in firms of management consultants, software and systems houses, and some large manufacturers of computing equipment offering consultancy services. Many computer systems analysts are employed directly by the organization they work for, but there are others who work as consultants. Consultants work is diverse and include that of manufacturers, the financial services sector, the public sector, automotive firms, global investment banks, and utility companies.
For experienced systems analysts chances for career advancement are more. They may move up to senior or lead systems analyst positions. They can also become computer and information systems managers, or manager of information systems or chief information officer. Those with expertise in a specific subject after gaining experience in the field can become independent consultants or may choose to start their own computer consulting firms.
The remuneration depends on the status of the industry and experience, qualifications and ability of the employee.
As compared to the government sector, private firms offer excellent pay packages. In India, a fresher can get a starting salary of Rs.15, 000 – Rs.25, 000 and within 1 or 2 year of experience it may gradually increase to Rs. 50, 000 or more per month.
