Educational: A degree in mining (B.E/Btech.) and a certificate from The Director General of Mines and Safety, Dhanbad, is a must to be in this field. Many engineering colleges in India offer undergraduate as well as postgraduate level courses in the field of mining engineering. Requirement for under graduate program is 10+2 in science stream and minimum eligibility for post graduate program is a Bachelor's degree in mining engineering. Any academic programme of mining engineering will include aspects like metallurgy and geology, planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of mines, their safety and excavating and transport of minerals.

Personnel attributes: The ability to think analytically, a capacity for detail, and the ability to work as part of a team are the main requisites for one who wants to be in this career. Good communication skills are also important. Mining engineering as a career combines several areas of expertise. In addition to specialist mining knowledge and engineering expertise, a mining engineer needs strong management skills, people skills and a sound understanding of financial and business principles.

 
Remuneration

Remuneration is as per the knowledge, skills and experience of the aspirants. Mining engineers enjoy the highest start-up salaries among the existing engineering professions in India. A beginner can earn up to Rs. 20000-Rs. 25000 per month. A person with higher qualification degree or two to three years of experience can expect higher salary. Fresh graduates from IITs and NITs even command far higher salaries than their other engineering colleges' students.
