Malayalee Engineers Association (MEA) is an association of Malayalee engineers living in Greater Houston area in the state of Texas, USA. MEA launched a modest, but visionary scheme to provide assistance to financially needy undergraduate engineering students in Kerala with good academic record and potential for future excellence. This assistance is in the form of a scholarship named MEA scholarship to pursue a 4-year degree course in Engineering, Technology, Computer Science, Architecture or Naval Architecture, in a college affiliated to any reputed university in India.
MEA Houston has been awarding scholarships every year since 2000. Students selected for MEA scholarships will be awarded an amount of $600 per year for four years, subject to academic performance.
Award of Scholarship shall be based on the academic merit and financial hardship of the applicant. A panel of MEA members shall select the scholarship winners based on merit and financial hardship of the candidate. Every year, the MEA Executive Committee decides on the number of scholarships to be awarded based on the funds raised.
The basic eligibility criteria for MEA Scholarship
The student shall be a Malayalee and should be enrolled in an engineering-degree course at a college in Kerala, India;
Students who have met all of the three (3) criteria provided below may only need to apply.
(1) Annual family income less than Rs.1,50,000 per year,
(2) Ranked lower than 5000 (1 to 5000) in the Govt. of Kerala Engineering
Entrance Examination
(3) Scored above 85% marks in Class X and XII examinations
At first, the scholarships are awarded for the first year of the Engineering course. The first-year awardees become eligible for funds in subsequent 3 years based on their academic performance (Typical requirement is that the awardee must secure at least 70% marks in an academic year)
The student shall submit the completed application form provided by MEA. Blank Application Form and Letter of Recommendation form may be downloaded from MEA website www.meahouston.org. Application form may also be available with the Principals of accredited engineering colleges in Kerala. Photostat copies of the blank forms are acceptable.
Documents to be attached with the application:
(i) Copies of the Marks-lists for: SSLC/CBSE/ICSE
(ii) Copies of Marks-list and Rank Certificate for Engineering Entrance Examination.
(ii) Letter of Recommendation from a former or current teacher or head master or head mistress of student’s school.
(iv) Income Certificate including all sources, issued by Tahsildar / Village Officer.
(v) Details of awards and honors received in extra curricular activities.
(vi) A letter or statement describing any extraordinary circumstances which you feel makes your application worthy of special consideration.
(vii) A statement providing details of scholarships, grants and non repayable financial awards the student may be receiving from sources other than MEA Houston. Include amounts, duration of payment, source’s name and basis of award in your statement.
Applications with all required attachments may be submitted by email to meet the deadline. Use meahouston@gmail.com for all scholarship-related email correspondence. If the application is filed via email, applicant must scan the completed application form, recommendation letter, income certificate and other documents in .pdf format and send it as attachment to their email. The email subject line must say ‘MEA ...... Scholarship application – Applicant’s Name’.
