Research Training Fellowship for Clinicians is launched by the Wellcome Trust/ DBT India Alliance. This Training Fellowship will provide adequate research training to prepare interested individuals to pursue a career of clinician scientist and help them strengthen their track record for pursuing a competitive research career. Major purpose of the fellowship program is to encourage basic, patient-oriented and translational research by clinicians. This Training Fellowship aims at providing clinicians with an opportunity to perform high quality basic, clinical and public health research in a laboratory, clinical or community environment of their choice. Overall, the Program must be built around a rigorous research focus and should provide comprehensive training in research methodology and experimental design.
Provisions
The Fellowship is for two years‚with an optional 1 year extension and provides:
The total award for the Research Training Fellowship is fixed at INR 34 lakhs for two years. This includes the contributions set by the India Alliance towards personal support, research related cost, travel cost, a contingency fund and 10% institutional overheads.
The Fellows can utilize this amount to cover research related costs, which may include consumables, animals, support to attend scientific meetings, support to pursue advanced courses, as appropriate and justified for their overall development.
Support funds for any major requirements (equipment or infrastructure) are not provided. It is expected that applicants will choose appropriate laboratories/ environments where majority of the necessary equipment and facilities required for carrying out the training project are already available.
Those clinicians, who wish to develop a research career, must either be in the final year of MD/MS or have completed their MD/MS at the time of application. It is important that the final year MD/MS students should have acquired their degree at the time of activation of the Fellowship award.
Fellowships may not be taken up prior to the completion of MD/MS. The Fellowship must be started within one year of being awarded.
Candidates with DM qualification can also apply to this Fellowship.
Candidates holding a faculty position can also apply provided the institution is willing to allow them to pursue research with reduced clinical duties.
Allied health professionals must have completed a Master’s degree in the respective stream at the time of application.
The following attributes would be expected of eligible candidates
Applicants must have a Sponsor at an eligible Host Institution that will administer
the Fellowship for the full duration of the award.A signed letter of support from
the sponsor is mandatory at the time of application.
Time commitment
This Fellowship will require clinicians to devote 4 days/week on the training program. They can continue to perform clinical duties for 1 day/week, including on call.

This application seeks to understand how the training will prepare the Applicant to undertake an independent research career.
Careful thought should be given to the choice of Supervisors and the Host Institution. The application should clearly specify the roles of the Principal Supervisor, Co-Supervisor and the supporting Host Institution.
With the assistance of Supervisors, the Applicant should identify the area in which he/she wants to get trained, rationale of choosing the area of development and how the acquired expertise will lay the foundation of their future research career.
The application is assessed to check the eligibility within one month of the submission deadline. If successful, it is subjected to an appropriate peer-review. Peer-reviewed applications will be considered by the Clinical and Public Health Selection Committee and, if successful, shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.
The Principal Supervisors will also be invited to attend the interview along with the shortlisted candidates. Both are interviewed together to get a clear understanding of the purpose of the Training Program developed by them. Both the candidate and Supervisors are, therefore, advised to work together as the extent of involvement would be carefully reviewed to understand the impact of the program.
Based on the interview, the Selection Committee will decide whether to fund the application.
