Institute of Rural Research and Development (IRRAD) is an initiative of S.M. Sehgal Foundation, registered as a trust since 1999. IRRAD is dedicated to improving lives and securing a brighter future for rural communities - focusing on water management, small-scale agriculture, and good village local governance. IRRAD implements impact-driven models for rural development; builds capacities of villagers and local institutions, with emphasis on women’s empowerment; and advances research and policy dialogue as a knowledge center on rural issues. IRRAD works with communities in Mewat and Alwar districts and provides technical expertise on specific projects in other locales within India.

Rural Research and Development (IRRAD) Fellowship is offered to doctoral/post-doctoral candidates for its research fellowship programme to work on rural development projects in the selected districts of India including Mewat district of Haryana and Alwar district of Rajasthan. The research fellowship will largely focus on analysing rural poverty and livelihood system dynamics of the communities and sustainability of IRRAD’s development interventions.

Thematic Areas-

1. Influence of changing agronomy on economics of crops such as wheat and mustard in semi-arid regions of India

2. Comparative research study of the performance of water-management institutions in the semi-arid villages of India

3. Enhancing community participation through capacity building

4. Comparative research study of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) policies in Rajasthan and Haryana

5. Understanding changing gender roles through various interfaces of rural development

6. Relevance of integrating indigenous communication tools with technological innovations to effect wider dissemination of development discourses

7. Facilitators and impediments in capturing gender disaggregated data for water, sanitation and hygiene in India

Eligibility Criteria

Indian citizens are eligible to apply for these fellowships.

Interested candidates must submit a research proposal on any of the available research themes. The research proposal must explain the need of the study, objective, research questions, literature review, methodology and scope of the study. The research proposal should not exceed 2500 words. The applicant can be a full time researcher or a Ph.D. student.

Duration of the fellowship: Six months

 Interested candidates can submit their research proposal together with curriculum vitae focusing on prior research work experience and/or research publications along with two references including one academic reference to research@irrad.org.

Amount of fellowship: Rs. 1,80,000
