The Young India Fellowship (YIF) is a one-year multidisciplinary postgraduate diploma programme in Liberal Studies at Ashoka University. The Fellowship brings together a group of bright young men and women who show exceptional intellectual ability and leadership potential, from across the country, and trains them to become socially committed agents of change. YIF exposes them to a diverse set of subjects and perspectives, delivered by some of the finest teachers and practitioners from India and around the world.

The aim is to help Fellows become well-rounded individuals who are able to think critically from multiple perspectives, communicate effectively and become leaders with a commitment to public service. Students from all disciplines and areas of study are welcome to YIF; engineers, designers, commerce graduates or literature enthusiasts are all mentored into reaching their full potential.

The Young India Fellowship is delivered in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering and Applied Science SEAS, University of Michigan, King's College London, Carelton College, Sciences Po, University of California Berkeley, Trinity College Dublin, Yale University and Wellesley College.

Ashoka University is a private, non-profit university. An unprecedented example of collective public philanthropy in India, it is a pioneer in its focus on the Liberal Arts. It offers its students a multidisciplinary liberal education, which is usually defined as one that transcends the boundaries between the arts and sciences, and carries a strong emphasis on learning across subjects.

The YIF offers financial support to successful applicants through full or partial scholarships and other forms of financial aid. The Fellowship offers a wide variety of subjects that enable breadth of learning and multiple perspectives. Courses at YIF include Sociology, Literature, Gender Studies, International Development, and Art Appreciation.

Download the application from the YIF website https://www.ashoka.edu.in/ and fill it up manually and send it to YIF office.

YIF offers a rolling admission process and is split into two rounds. Each round accepts applications within a specified timeframe and selects Fellows from the pool of applications from that round.

Please refer official website for important timelines for the two rounds.

Selection procedure

The selection process will be carried out in 3 stages:

Application Assessment: All applications are reviewed by the selection committee consisting of faculty and executive members of the programme. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of their academic performance through school and college and their involvement in extra-curricular activities. Their interests and concerns along with their thoughts and motivation for a meaningful life as expressed in their essays also make an impression on the reviewer’s mind.

Telephonic Interview: Short-listed applicants are interviewed on the telephone before they are called for an in-person interview. Candidates will be notified in advance about when the telephonic interview will take place. It is typically a conversation regarding the information that the candidate has mentioned on their application and may include a discussion about their areas of interests. Most telephonic interviews will not be longer than 15 – 20 minutes.

Comprehension Test and Personal Interview:

On the day of the Personal Interview, candidates will be required to take a comprehension test just before the interview. They will be tested on their reading, understanding, articulation skills and critical thinking ability, not on their knowledge of subject matter. Candidates are interviewed in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore. International candidates have the option to interview on Skype.

The final selection will be based on the cumulative score of all the 3 stages.
