National Institutes of Technologies (NITs) are the premier institution of the
country established by the Act of Parliament, under the aegis of Ministry of
HRD, Government of India, for imparting world class technical education. Earlier,
NITs were referred as Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) and were governed
by their respective state governments. In 2007, the Indian government declared
these schools as Institute of National Importance (INI).
NITs offer degree courses at bachelors, masters, and doctorate levels in various
branches of engineering and technology. Admission to undergraduate courses in
these National Institutes of Technologies are by Joint Entrance Examination
(JEE-Mains) (erstwhile All India Engineering Entrance Examination) conducted
across India. M.Tech. admission decisions are made on the basis of Graduate
Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). At present, there are 30 NITs spread across
India, in various states.
