Indian Institutes of Technology colleges commonly known as IIT's - the top engineering
colleges in the world, are a group of autonomous public engineering institutes
of India. The IITs are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which
has declared them as "institutions of national importance", and lays
down their powers, duties, framework for governance etc. Each IIT is an autonomous
institution, linked to the others through a common IIT Council, which oversees
their administration. Admission to undergrauate courses in IITs are through
Joint Entrance Examination (JEE-Advance) (erstwhile IIT- JEE). M.Tech. admission
decisions are made on the basis of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

Madras is one among the foremost institutes of national importance
in higher technological education, basic and applied research.
IT Delhi is an autonomous
statutory organisation functioning in terms of the Institutes of
Technology Act, 1961 amended vide the Institutes of Technology
(Amendment) Act, 1963 and the Statutes framed thereunder.
Established in 1959 as one of the
first Indian Institutes of Technology, the institute was created
with the assistance of a consortium of nine leading US research
universities as part of the Kanpur Indo-American Programme
The Institute was established on
July 22, 2008 under the mentorship of IIT Kharagpur. Exactly
a year later the Institute started functioning at the temporary
campus of IIT Bhubaneswar in Samantapuri, Bhubaneswar

from August 2008 form its temporary campus located in Ordnance
Factory, Medak district. On February, 27, 2009, on its main
campus in Kandi, the foundation stone of IIT Hyderabad was laid
by Smt. Sonia Gandhi.

IIT Indore started functioning
from 2009-10 in a temporary campus at Institute of Engineering

IIT Bombay.

education institute located in Mandi. IIT Mandi is mentored by
IIT Roorkee, which hosted the first batch of students.
The Indian Institute of Technology Patna (abbreviated
IIT Patna or IITP) is an autonomous institute of
education and research in science, engineering and
technology located in Patna, India. It is recognized as
an Institute of National Importance by the Government of
India. IIT Patna has three schools – (1) School of
Engineering consisting of the following Departments
namely, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical and
Biochemical Engineering, Civil & Environmental
Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering (2) School
of Basic Sciences consisting of Chemistry, Physics, and
Mathematics Departments (3) School of Humanities
consisting of Humanities & Social Science Department.
Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar came into
existence in July 22, 2008, inheriting the brand name
IIT. This fact itself charges the Institute not only to
be worthy of its inheritance but also to be distinctive
and distinguished on its own by scripting a path towards
novelties.
Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati is located at Merlapaka on
Yerpedu-Venkatagiri road, 22 kilometers from Tirupati
and 14 kilometers from the airport. The A.P. Government
provided over 590 acres with a scenic mountain
backdrop for the development of a modern campus.
IIT Tirupati started functioning with the support of its
mentoring institute, IIT Madras, from the academic year
of 2015-16. Large industrial parks like Sri City near Tada
already exist in the vicinity of the campus.
The A.P. Government proposes to further develop major
industrial activity in the Chennai-Nellore-Tirupati
triangle area. This would provide many opportunities of
internships and placement for the students studying at
IIT Tirupati.
IIT - Jammu is set up at the foothills of the Shivalik range of Himalaya, in approximately 400
acres in a forest area near Jammu City. The new
institution will take shape in a few years time. In the
meanwhile, a transit campus is being built at the same
site to start the activities of the Institute.
IIT Palakkad is one of the new IITs being mentored by
IIT Madras. It is currently functioning from a temporary
campus situated in the Ahalia Health Heritage and
Knowledge Village, located about 25 km from the Palakkad
railway station.
The academic session in IIT Bhilai will commence from
August 2016. As the mentor institute, IIT Hyderabad will
facilitate the functioning of IIT Bhilai.
The campus for the Indian Institute of Technology Goa
(IIT Goa) is developed at Loliem, a quiet town in
Canacona taluka in the southernmost tip of Goa. Mentored
by IIT Bombay, the academic activities of IIT Goa are
well tuned to expose the student to a vibrant academic
culture and bring out the best in every student.
Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad (IIT Dharwad)
is located at the outskirts of the twin cities of
Hubballi-Dharwad in the north of Karnataka. Mentored by
IIT Bombay, the academic activities of IIT Dharwad are
well tuned to bring out the best in every student.
