This examination is held twice a year generally in the months of July and December, as advertised in the Employment News and leading newspapers.
Eligibility Conditions: Unmarried male Indian citizens are eligible.
Essential Qualification: Matric or equivalent preferably with Science.
Age Limits: 14 to 19 years (relaxable by 5 years for SC/ ST candidates).
Physical Standards: Weight-45 kg (Maximum). Height 150 cm (Minimum) and well-developed chest with minimum expansion of 5 cm.
Application Procedure: Candidates must submit their applications in the prescribed Performa published in the Employment News to the nearest Recruitment Zone by the prescribed date.
Selection Procedure: The subjects of the written examination, time allowed and the maximum marks for each paper will be as under:

Mathematics:
(a) Number system, Natural numbers, Integers, Rational and real numbers, Commutative,
Associative and Distributive law, Fundamental operations-addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division, Square root, Decimal fractions.
(b) Unitary method-application to simple and compound interest, time
and distance, time and work, percentages, profit and loss, ratio and proportion,
averages, areas and volumes.
(c) Factors, Problems and Equations of Algebra:
General Knowledge and General Science:
Abbreviations, Books and Authors, Facts about India and the World, Sports, Awards and Prizes, Everyday Science, short notes on various subjects in 100 words.
Interview: Based on the performance of the candidates in the written examination, candidates will be called for interview at Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta and Bangalore. Based on the performance of the candidates in the final interview, the selected candidates will be sent to Naval Dockyard School, Mumbai for training. Period of training is three years for most trades.
