Job prospects

Police service can be one of the most rewarding and challenging career choices. Jobs in this field are divided into Gazetted Police Officer and Non-Gazetted officer jobs.

One can join as a Gazetted Police Officer once you clear the Civil Service exam, or can join Indian Police as a Non-Gazetted officer. For this IPS is not required, but it has other requirements of qualification, written examination, age limit and physical test.

The requirement for each career in Police is different. Based on your education you can directly join any of the post depending upon the vacancy.

Career options

There are diverse areas of police work, such as the Criminal Investigation Department, Firearms Unit, Dogs Section, Air Operations, Security and more. One can join the police service in various fields like:

Criminal Investigation Department

Criminal Investigation Department is the special wing of police force in many states of India, that was formed from the Special Police Establishment in 1941. In police organization, police officials can work as detectives. Police detectives are responsible for investigations and detective work. Detectives may be called Investigations Police, Judiciary/Judicial Police and Criminal Police. They are often referred to by the name of their department, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). CID officers are involved in investigation of major crimes such as rape, murder, serious assault, fraud and any other offences that require complex detection. Their main role is to investigate serious crime and to act upon intelligence, which can lead to the arrest and prosecution of offenders. They perform investigative duties such as gathering facts and collecting evidence for criminal cases and fraud. Their job as Police detectives is to enforce laws, catch criminals, collect evidence and testify in court.

Dog Handler 

You would need to be working in the service before becoming a dog handler. Police dog handlers usually need at least three years experience in ordinary police work before being transferred to the dog section. Police and security units all over the globe rely on the formidable powers of dogs – namely their senses of smell and hearing. Trained dogs are then used to search for explosives, weapons and drugs. Also they search missing, lost, or injured people, protect people and detain the offenders. Dog handlers must know how to care for the dog, must be self-confident, have interest of working with dogs and have a genuine love for the animals. They must have very good communication skills and be able to work as a team. This job in police is very much required and vacancies for this are regularly updated.

Firearms Unit

The Firearms Unit plays a valuable role within the Police Service and community. They are trained in the use of firearms and are drafted in to support operations, which require armed assistance. Career in police as firearms experts is very demanding as officers have to risk his or her life while saving others.

Fraud Investigation Unit

A Fraud Squad is a police department which investigates fraud and other economic crimes. It deals with company business fraud, major deceptions and corruption allegations, and also provides assistance and guidance for area detectives on various matters pertaining to fraud investigation.

Special Branch

The Special Branch is a separate wing in the State police forces in India. Special Branch police officers jobs exists primarily to acquire intelligence for the protection of national security, in particular protection against terrorism, espionage, sabotage, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and from actions intended to overthrow democracy by political, industrial or violent means.

Traffic Unit

This unit is responsible for the investigation of all serious and fatal motor vehicle accidents that occur within the city limits. With the rising population and too many vehicles on the road, proper management of traffic is very important. Traffic police officials keep constant vigil. They ensure road safety by enforcing traffic laws, including those relating to speeding and drunken driving.

Forensic Expert

With the increase in crime rates in society, role of forensic experts is rapidly progressing. Using the clues collected from the scene of the crime they make evidences which are admissible in a court of law. They work closely with police or part of police, and prepare report of their investigation.

There are also other branches like the air unit, drug trafficking and narcotics unit, cyber crime cell, administrative services etc.
