Sociology is the scientific study of human society and its origins, development, organizations, and institutions. It encompasses the study of human behaviour, its causes and consequence; and social interaction of people in groups to understand how societies organize, develop and change. Almost any aspect of how human beings gather together in groups, organizations, and societies can be studied within sociology. The sociological perspective is valued in business, health, social service, criminal justice, law, media, and government sectors of society.

Sociologists study human behavior, which is greatly influenced and governed by social, religious, and legal guidelines, within the guidelines of an organizational structure. In brief terms, sociologists study how people behave in groups, providing insight into what it means to be a human in today's world. This includes developing a keen understanding of human activities, interactions, and political and economic tendencies. The study involves all aspects of human experience and activity. Sociologist also study the role that social institutions have on humans perspective and identity.

Sociology is a very vast field, so sociologists specialize in one or more areas within the field. Some of them concentrate on youngsters and deal with problems of adolescence. Yet another group study social factors affecting mental and public health. Some sociologists study the behaviour of criminals to draw conclusions on specific crime in order to help law makers. Sociology offers its students a broad education in critical thinking, analytical problem solving, reasoned judgement, and effective communication.

Earlier it was a common misunderstanding that training in sociology was only useful for prospective social workers or political activists. And maybe the only scope in the professional level was to opt for a teaching position. But now situation has changed, those who posses a degree in sociology have opportunities in government as well as private sector. Sociology applies sociological perspective to a wide variety of jobs in such sectors as business, medicine & public health professions, criminal justice system, social services, politics and public policy, public administration etc.

Eligibility

To become a professional in Sociology one should have a graduate degree (B.A./M.A.) in Sociology or its related fields. Degree and postgraduate degree courses are offered by private and government colleges and universities in India.

A candidate should have 10+2 preferably in social sciences for pursuing sociology at graduation level. Similarly, a good percentage in sociology is needed to pursue sociology at post graduation level. Most sociologist jobs require a masters degree to work in government, research and educational settings, while working as a sociology professor or faculty member means that applicants must hold a PhD.

Sociologists are employed by research institutes, the criminal justice system, public health and welfare organizations, private businesses, law firms, international agencies, medical centers, educational institutions, advertising firms, survey and polling organizations. Sociologists also work in business, human resources and journalism sector. In some sectors, sociologists work closely with economists, political scientists, anthropologists, psychologists andsocial workers.

The most common jobs held by sociologists are that of educators or teachers, researchers, administrators, consultants and counselors. Other careers in which those with a bachelors degree in sociology often secure employment are as case workers, paralegals, public relations workers, urban planners, community organizers, public policy researchers, and data analysts. People with sociology degree most often choose teaching as profession, teaching in a college level needs masters degree and may even further advance their level with a Ph.D and M.Phil. Another common job opted by this subject specialists are that of a researcher. Nonacademic research jobs are available in government agencies, private research institutions, and the research departments of private corporations. Research work include conducting market research, public opinion surveys, evaluation research and impact assessments. Sociologists enter the corporate, non-profit, and government worlds as policy analysts, directors of research, consultants, human resource managers, public information officers and program managers.

Remuneration

Earnings of sociologists depend on the education and experience of an individual, as well as on the location and kind of job. The salary can be from Rs.6,000 to Rs.10,000 for beginners and increases with experience and knowledge. Those employed under government sector earn in a range of Rs. 8,000 to Rs.10,000 per month. For lecturers in colleges salary will be as per UGC norms. A higher salary can be expected for those who are working in industries and corporate houses.
